ABOUT HERMAN BROOD

Herman Brood’s painting, drawing, music and poetry stemmed from the same need for speed and direct expression. He made portraits, female figures, musicians, animals and scenes full of humour, seduction and rock-‘n-roll.
His art does not show a carefully polished reality, but captures a moment or feeling. Behind the exuberant colours and free lines are themes such as freedom, rebellion, desire and human vulnerability.

STYLE AND TECHNIQUE

Herman Brood worked with painting, drawings, screen printing and mixed techniques. Depending on the artwork, he used paint, spray cans, felt-tip pens, brushes and paint rollers on canvas, paper and other carriers, among other things.

Bright colour areas in red, yellow and blue are surrounded by powerful black lines. Lyrics, slogans and his characteristic signature are often part of the composition. The influence of CoBrA, pop art, graffiti and action painting is visible, but Brood developed his own unmistakeable handwriting.

INTERNATIONAL CAREER

With Herman Brood & His Wild Romance, Brood also broke through outside the Netherlands in the late 1970s. The song “Saturday Night” attracted attention in Europe and the United States, where he performed in New York and Los Angeles, among others.
In the 1980s and 1990s, his visual arts became increasingly important. His paintings, drawings, silkscreens and action paintings found their way to galleries and collectors. Even after his death, his oeuvre remained visible during museum exhibitions and on the international art market.
